COSS was inspired by the idea of using magnets to gather and secure stationary supplies. Jeon noticed the problem of lost supplies in schools and offices and realized that magnets could be the perfect solution. Each part of COSS is not only easily separable but also equipped with a magnet that allows them to automatically gather when in close proximity. This ensures that supplies are never lost and can be carried comfortably.
One of the standout features of COSS is its square shape. Each tool is designed to be easily gripped, providing a comfortable and secure hold. The square-shaped knife, in particular, offers improved safety compared to rounded knives, which can be slippery and potentially dangerous. With COSS, users can confidently carry and use their stationary supplies without any worries.
The realization of COSS involves the use of durable plastic for the cover, ensuring it is not fragile and can withstand everyday use. The square shape of the cover provides a convenient and non-slippery grip. Embedded magnets at the end of each stationary supply allow for easy attachment and detachment, as well as automatic gathering when in close proximity. The magnets can also revolve, allowing each part to be attached in any direction.
COSS specifications include a size of 20mm x 20mm x 150mm for the stationary supplies. The materials used are plastic, stainless steel, and magnets, ensuring durability and functionality.
With COSS, carrying and using stationary supplies becomes a breeze. The four functions of a pen, a sharp pencil, a knife, and a ruler are all conveniently combined into one tool. Each part can be easily separated for individual use, and there is no need to carry all four supplies at once. The automatic gathering feature ensures that supplies are never lost, providing peace of mind to users.
The COSS project started in May 2013 and was completed in June 2013 in Korea. It gained recognition and was showcased on the internet site Yanko Design. Additionally, it was awarded the Silver Spark Design Award, further highlighting its innovative design and functionality.
Gyeong-Gyu Jeon conducted extensive research to identify common problems faced by people when using stationary supplies. The issue of losing supplies emerged as a significant concern. This led to the brainstorming and sketching phase, followed by the selection of materials and the creation of 2D and 3D models using AutoCAD and Rhinoceros. A video clip showcasing COSS was also created using Photoshop and After Effects.
The challenges faced during the design process revolved around finding a solution to gather the four stationary supplies into one product. The use of magnets initially posed a problem as they would sometimes push each other instead of gathering. However, by allowing the magnets to revolve, this issue was successfully resolved.
COSS is a game-changer in the world of stationery supplies. It offers convenience, functionality, and a unique design that sets it apart from traditional options. With COSS, users can carry and use their stationary supplies with ease, knowing that they will never be lost. Its square shape ensures a comfortable grip, and its multifunctionality makes it a must-have tool for anyone in need of reliable and practical stationery supplies.
